The Christchurch Town Hall is a significant part of the urban and heritage fabric of Christchurch. The Town Hall is an iconic building that has received national and international prominence since it opened in 1972. The building has become a multi-use building, holding conventions, concerts, musical events, prize givings and corporate events. The Town Hall has a number of special spaces such as the Auditorium, which is still ranked in the top five in the world acoustically. This project was the first major refurbishment of the Town Hall since its original construction and including a new restaurant and café.
The projects goals included re-establishing functional and aesthetic standards, addressing deferred maintenance, improving the products and services of the Town Hall and modernising key spaces without affecting the critical heritage fabric of the building.
This complex project worked around very strict heritage constraints, while maintaining the venue at near to full operating capacity, in an inner city environment.
The scope included obtaining local government funding, procuring and managing the design team, obtaining all relevant authority approvals, managing planning and heritage teams, consulting with key stakeholders, procuring and managing the main contractor during construction and commissioning phases.
